CBD is taking the world by storm.

Everyone, from the high profile athletes and sports professionals to those suffering from chronic diseases and those treating their pets with CBD, is all swearing by the cannabis-derived liquid.

It’s quickly gaining a reputation as one of the biggest breakthroughs in modern medicine and, despite the severe lack of FDA approved drugs (with only a single approved), the number of people using is multiplying each and every day.

However, with the lack of FDA approval, it can be difficult to land on the correct dosage for individual treatment. With CBD able to treat so many different ailments, diseases, and conditions, it’s no wonder that some users remain a little in the dark with how much they actually should be taking.

1. Dosages aren’t “one-size-fits-all”

The first thing to note when discussing CBD dosages is that one-size-doesn’t-fit-all.

As with the majority of medicines or drugs, the recommended dosage differs from person to person. The dosage of CBD that should be taken will vary on the following criteria:

  • Bodyweight
  • The condition targetted
  • Individual body chemistry

The most reliable way in which to get a foundation number for dosage is by visiting a doctor for advice – the number that they give should be the number that an individual should stick to.

However, if no dosage is given, it’s often recommended to start small and opt for between 20 and 40 mg per day, increasing by 5 mg per day until an individual’s symptoms are reduced sufficiently.

It’s a good idea to keep a journal of CBD dosage and the effects felt, this way progress can be reviewed, giving a good sample of data to work from in the future.

2. How to calculate a CBD dosage

Once you’ve either been recommended or decided upon a dosage, it’s important to be able to accurately calculate a CBD dosage to coincide with your decision.

The majority of CBD products available will specify exactly how much CBD is contained in the product. By dividing your dosage by the amount of CBD in a product, you can work out exactly how much you should be taking to match.

It can be difficult to work out exactly how much CBD to take when in dropper form and although the bottle may specify how many ml are in a drop, it can be confusing to target the correct number of drops.

As a general rule, one drop (not a full dropper) is equivalent to 0.05 milliliters (mL) which will roughly equate to 5mg of CBD. So, as with the example above, if you’re looking to start off at 20g of CBD, 4 drops of oil should be used.

3. Purchasing high-quality products

One of the biggest safety issues surrounding the consumption of CBD is with the sourcing of lower-quality products that include synthetic CBD within the ingredients list.

A 2018 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), found that among the users of CBD products in Utah, a total of 52 residents reported bad reactions to certain products. Upon investigation, these products were found to contain synthetic CBD and did not contain any information surrounding either the manufacturer or ingredients.

As the substance is not yet regulated by the FDA, is down to the purchasing individual to do their research and make judgments on brands regarding both the quality and safety of the products.

Fake, low-quality and questionably cheap products can be dangerous, so it’s vital that genuine CBD is purchased and taken.

4. There are minimal side effects of too much CBD

The topic of “overdosing” or consuming “too much” CBD is a hot one, and has led to a number of reviews surrounding the area.

A 2011 review discussed the safety and side effects of CBD to be well tolerated by humans with the review investigating dosages up to 1,500 mg per day. A 2017 update later confirmed the review, but concerns arose in a 2019 study that targeted mice and displayed the potential for liver damage alongside potential issues with other medications.

There are, however, a number of well-understood possible side effects that stem from consuming too much CBD including the following:

  • Fatigue
  • Diarrhea
  • Appetite changes
  • Weight changes
