Your current landlord has kicked you out without notice. Or you’re moving to a new town and waited until the last minute to start your search for a new place. What do you do if you find yourself in a situation where you have to find a new home in days? I know the pressure to get a rental in a matter of days can drive you crazy.

But relax, it is possible to find yourself a place to rent within a week. In this article, I’ll share with you tips to help you do that. It doesn’t matter if you’re trying to find housing for rent in Vienna, New York, Paris or Hong Kong, these tips will make the search a lot easier and faster.

Start your search immediately

You’re limited on time, so seating around, and complaining about how your landlord is whatever unprintable word you want to call them won’t help. Instead, go online and look at what is available on the rental websites in your area. Doing this will give you a feel of what is available at the price range you’re looking to pay for a unit. If you see a place you like, you can book it directly online. Waiting around may result in the property be taken by someone else.

Do some legwork

You already have an idea of the area you would be happy to live in. Go there and walk around or drive around in your car, looking for apartments with a “for rent sign.” Since you’re in the area knock the door of the property to see if you can have a chat with the realtor.

If they’re not there write down all the addresses and phones numbers of all the places you see, and when you get back home, begin calling each of them. Try and walk around as many neighborhoods as possible because the more places you see, the better the chance you’ll get a last minute rental.

Ask around

The key to finding a place to live fast is to inquire from anyone you meet if they know of a good place to rent. So tell your friends, family, workmates, business colleagues, etc. to inform you when they see any apartments for rent.

You can also post online that you’re looking for a place to move to urgently. I’m sure if you do this, you will get many leads which can help narrow down your search.

Keep an open mind

Because you’re trying to find a new place in a number of days you might not get your dream house. Be prepared to accept the next best thing. You may find a good but smaller apartment or one that is a floor higher than you wanted. Take these apartments and maybe after some time, you can look for a new place when you have more time to do so.

Be prepared to sign a rental agreement

When you go to view a property, carry the necessary documents needed to sign a rental lease. This includes your ID, bank statements, credit report, etc. This way if you find a clean and affordable apartment, you can give the landlord your documents and expedite the approval process.

If you follow the tips, I recommend your search for a house will be much easier. And you don’t have to panic when you have a week to move into a new apartment.
