Up to one-third of all Americans ignore regular car maintenance. Unfortunately, this results in more breakdowns and higher repair costs.
If your car is running fine, investing money into it may seem silly. However, this is the only way it will continue running properly.
Are you ready to learn how to maintain a car? If so, keep reading for some maintenance tips that will keep your vehicle on the road mile after mine, problem-free.
1. Use the Recommendations in the Owner’s Manual
Start with the owner’s manual for car maintenance. This will give you all the make and model-specific information you need about your vehicle.
For example, what type of fuel is recommended by the manufacturer? How often should the oil and transmission fluid be changed? Be sure to read and follow the recommendations for optimal vehicle performance.
2. Check Your Tires
It’s easy to take your tires for granted. Unfortunately, that’s not a good idea. The tires are the only part of your vehicle that comes in contact with the road.
Did you know that under-inflated tires are more likely to cause a serious accident? Be sure to check your tires once a month, at least. Also, consider having your tires rotated every 6,000 to 8,000 miles.
3. Check All Fluids
It’s a good idea to check your oil and other fluids, like the transmission fluid, every month. If it is time for transmission service, be sure to use a professional service provider, such as A Plus Transmission & Auto Repair.
While checking fluids, be sure to check the water in your radiator and the windshield washer fluid. Both of these are also essential to remain safe while on the road.
4. Check the Engine’s Air Filter
The air filter’s maintenance schedule depends on the recommendations from the manufacturer. However, if you drive in harsh conditions, such as dirt roads, the filter will clog up faster. If this is the case, then more frequent changes will be needed.

5. Check the Battery
No one wants to have to deal with a dead battery. The good news is, most auto shops offer battery testing for a pretty affordable price. This lets you find potential issues with your battery long before you’re stuck having to call a tow truck.
Also, a good rule of thumb is to have your battery replaced every four or five years. This is usually when they begin to fail.
