Straight-up blackjack on its own is a relatively simple game to play and understand. It is played with a single deck of 52 cards. Usually, you are dealt two cards, either face up or face down depending on the casino rules. The dealer is dealt two cards as well, although sometimes they will have one facing up and the other facing down.

You have either one or numerous players that bet against the dealer and never each other. The first one to get 21 or the closest number to it, wins. If you or the dealer go over 21, it is considered a bust, and the other person wins.

Cards 2 through 10 equal the same value as what they display. A Jack, Queen or King (known as face cards), all equal 10. An Ace could either be a 1 or an 11. Your hand is the total of your cards. Seems simple enough, right?

However, as the market for online casinos grows, so do the variations of the different games – blackjack is no different. Players wanted more – more thrills, more opportunities to win, and more chances to up their skills and strategies. Here are a few types of blackjack available to online gamblers.

American Or Classic Blackjack

This is the most well-known way that blackjack is played. In this version, the dealer receives a card that stays face down (also known as the hole card) before any participants can make any decisions regarding their hand.

You have a bit more flexibility in this version – for instance, players can split their hand up to three times in one game, meaning you could be playing four hands simultaneously.

It is also different from European blackjack in terms of doubling down and splitting.

European Blackjack

Generally, more restrictive than the classic version, the dealer will only receive their hole card after a player has decided what to do with his hand. You are only allowed to double down on 9, 10, or 11 totals, and you may not be allowed to double down after you have split in certain games.

Splitting is restricted to once for each player, for each hand.

Super Fun 21

As the name suggests, this promises players a great time and a good chance to win. It follows similar guidelines to American blackjack but differs when it comes to payout.

If you get a Diamond Blackjack, your winning ratio is 2:1. A normal or natural blackjack still gets you money even if you tie with the dealer.

Progressive Blackjack

This version follows the normal rules of a classic blackjack – with a twist in favor of the player. You have the chance to win the cumulative jackpot, which may be big money. You are only required to place an extra bet to qualify for this.

Spanish 21

This form comes with a unique twist – all the 10 cards (the face cards) are removed from the deck, leaving you with 48 cards to play the game.

Although this makes it harder to hit 21, there are some advantages to playing this game: you can give up your hand once the dealer has checked his cards, and you get half your bet back. This is better than losing it all. You are also allowed to double down even after you split – great if you have two Aces. Another advantage is if you tie with the dealer, you automatically win.

All in all, it’s worth it to give this variation a try, as you may come out a winner and will definitely have tons of fun.
